Checklist

Side hustle idea validation checklist

This is for anyone with a side hustle idea who has not yet had a stranger pay for it. Work down the list, tick each step as you finish it, or print the page and use paper. A step is only done when you have something real to point to, such as a message, a booking or a payment, not when you feel ready.

1. Name the buyer and the problem
2. Look for existing demand
3. Talk to likely buyers
4. Run a small paid test
5. Check the numbers and your time
6. Decide

Your ticks are saved only in this browser, on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use this

The order matters. Steps 1 to 3 cost almost nothing and often show a weak idea in days. Step 4 is the real test, because people say yes to ideas far more often than they pay for them. Keep the pass mark small and honest: one or two paying strangers tell you more than a dozen friends saying it sounds good. Friends and family are fine to ask, but a purchase from them is weaker evidence than one from someone with no reason to be kind.

Failing a test is a useful result. It tells you to change the buyer, the offer or the price, or to put the idea down and save the setup costs. If you are tired or short of time, lower the scope of the test rather than skipping steps. Rules on licences, taxes and platform terms vary by place, so check the ones that apply to you or ask a qualified professional.

Where this comes from

The sequence follows common small-business practice: research the customer and competitors, talk to likely buyers, then run a small paid test before investing. We did not check this against one named source, and we have not tested the checklist ourselves. For tax points, the profit calculator page names the general IRS guidance we read. It is general information, not business, legal or tax advice.
